Be a part of a South Shore tradition, as Plimoth Plantation announces its 17th Annual Spring Clean Day, scheduled for March 13, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition, for those interested in Mayflower II’s Maritime Program, the Museum has added an additional Spring Clean Day, dedicated to getting her ship-shape for the 2010 season. This additional clean up will be held on Tuesday, March 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“Despite the wintery weather, the days are getting longer and everyday brings us closer to spring,” said Richard Pickering, Plimoth Plantation’s deputy director. “Our museum staff is looking forward to the upcoming Spring-Clean Days as an annual tradition and a way for the staff to work closely with the amazing volunteers, who support the Museum, by spending a rewarding day pitching-in to benefit Plimoth Plantation and Mayflower II.”

For more than 17 years, Plimoth Plantation has been welcoming community members of all ages to join Museum staff for a family-friendly, fun-filled day of hands-on activities as they wash, paint, rake, sweep houses, prepare gardens, move and clean furniture and do any number of spring cleaning duties to prepare the museum for Opening Day, Saturday, March 20, 2010.

Spring-Clean Day registration, begins at 9 a.m., at the Henry Hornblower Visitor’s Center. There, volunteers will be divided into teams and assigned jobs; by 9:30 a.m., volunteers will head out to the various sites, including indoor exhibit spaces, the Wampanoag Homesite, the17th Century English Village and Mayflower II.

At 1 p.m., the Museum will provide a hearty mid-day lunch, so helpers will be energized for any end of day activities. As a thank you, each volunteer will receive one complimentary admission pass to return to Plimoth Plantation and Mayflower II during the 2010 season.

Weather in New England is never predictable, and Spring Clean Day will go on rain or shine, so organizers suggest all volunteers prepare for the elements by dressing in layers. However, in the event of extreme inclement weather, a snow-date is scheduled for Sunday, March 14, from 9  a.m. to 3  p.m.

“Especially in today’s economy, not-for-profit organizations, like Plimoth Plantation, rely on the help from our good friends and wonderful volunteers to help us succeed,” said Executive Director Ellie Donovan. “Plimoth Plantation is an important cultural resource for our region, and a destination for visitors from all over the world, but without volunteers, Plimoth Plantation would not be the museum we are today. We are grateful for their dedication and service, and we appreciate all the time our volunteers so generously give to the museum year after year…we can’t wait to see old faces and meet new volunteers in 2010.”

Volunteers are asked to pre-register by March 5, by contacting ppeters@plimoth.org, at 508/746-1622, ext. 8210.

Plimoth Plantation opens for the 63rd season on Saturday March 20, with a Farm Fresh Breakfast Buffet, followed by the Museum’s annual Rare Breeds Animal Parade at 10:30 a.m. Visit www.plimoth.org for more information.
