Project Arts free Wednesday concerts

PLYMOUTH – Project Arts of Plymouth Inc. is pleased to announce the lineup for the 2009 Wednesday night free summer concert series.

July 8: Steve Smith & the Nakeds, 40 years of soul, blues and R&B

The concert series runs from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. every Wednesday from June 24 through Aug. 26. Concerts take place in Pilgrim Memorial Park (South Park location), located on the waterfront at the intersection of Water and Leyden streets. On clear nights Bill Luzader from the Plymouth Planetarium sets up a telescope for stargazers. There is ample public parking in and around the concert site. This series is an extremely popular community event drawing many thousands of attendees each summer. Families and children are welcome to attend and are encouraged to bring a blanket and/or lawn chairs.

 
 
Artisans fair at Village Landing

PLYMOUTH – See the sights at the high quality craft fair every Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m., now through Sept. 3, in the Village Landing Market Place in Plymouth. This event will feature artisans selling only their own handmade crafts or artwork. There will be no imports or purchased items intended for resale. This is a family friendly environment that is fun for all. There is no admission charge and plenty of free parking. Thursdays on the Porch

PLYMOUTH – Thursdays on the Porch, a new summer series at the Plymouth Center for the Arts, will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. July 2-Aug. 20. Each Thursday a different artist or artists will demonstrate their techniques on the Center’s front porch (moving indoors in inclement weather). Artist will answer questions as they work so others can learn how they achieve their unique expression on canvas, paper, film, or in clay or other media. The Center’s galleries, normally closed at 4 p.m., will be open for browsing through 8 each Thursday. For more information, call 508-746-7222.

July 2 will feature Brenda Cobb (oils), Audrey Coughlin (watercolors) and Sarah Bates Washburn (abstract art). Music will be provided by classical guitarist Richard Mulcahy.

July 9, four artists will be on hand: Brenda Cobb, Audrey Coughlin, Karen Kolbinsky and Sarah Bates Washburn. 
 
 
Thursday night free concerts

PLYMOUTH – Leonard Vaz, the Musicians’ Performance Fund coordinator of Local 281, A.F. of M., Plymouth, has announced that L. Knife & Son will cosponsor the summer concert series for the 2009 season with the Town of Plymouth Promotions Fund, the Plymouth Cultural Council, the Music Performance Funds, Ernie’s Restaurant and L.E. Cook Monument Co.

The concerts take place at 7 p.m. Thursdays, unless otherwise noted. All concerts are free and open to the public and are held on the waterfront near Plymouth Rock. Postponed concerts will be held the following Tuesday.

The schedule is as follows: July 2, Legion Bud Band and July 9, Don Besegai’s Big Band.
 
 
Brewster summer concert series

PLYMOUTH – Brewster Productions has launched its second annual School’s Out summer concert series. This year, the concert series will expand to a two-venue schedule. Last summer’s popular Acoustic Evenings on the Harbor series is again being offered on the lawn of the Hedge House on Water Street most Fridays at 7 p.m. from May 29 to Sept. 4, sponsored by the Plymouth Antiquarian Society.

Bands like 3rd Left, the Eagle Hill Band and Release will rock the main stage in Pilgrim Memorial State Park at 7 p.m. four separate Saturdays: July 11, July 18, Aug. 8 and Aug 15.

The School’s Out summer concert series is a newly incorporated Massachusetts nonprofit organization, seeking to promote the arts in Plymouth and raise awareness of the importance of public education nationwide. It is managed by Brewster Productions, which was founded in 2007 by Plymouth South High School Class of 2005 graduates Scott McEwen, Jon Dorn and Harry Quinn. Donations are sought to aid in funding this nonprofit effort to promote the arts in the burgeoning cultural center of Plymouth. Sail Plymouth update

PLYMOUTH – The Plymouth Area Chamber of Commerce presents a new event for 2009. Sail Plymouth, will be held July 3-6 on Plymouth’s waterfront, featuring the tall ships Amistad and Peacemaker, and will also include Plymouth’s Mayflower II.

The three-day Sail Plymouth festival will kick off Thursday night when the community welcomes the Amistad and Peacemaker into Plymouth Harbor to dock by Mayflower II at State Pier. Other events will include a Friday night Parade of Boats, featuring vessels competing to be chosen the most festively decorated boat in Plymouth Harbor. Daily boat tours will also be available and there will be a July Fourth fireworks viewing aboard Amistad, tickets for which must be purchased in advance. There will also be a Sail Plymouth carnival, Blessing of the Fleet and more.

Free Sail Plymouth shuttle service will be provided by the P&B Street Railway Co. from the Exit 5 Visitors Center and Shops at 5 shopping center July 4 and 5 to those who have a Sail Plymouth wristband, which may be purchased on the Sail Plymouth shuttle.

The freedom schooner Amistad was built at the Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard at Mystic Seaport and launched in 2000.     Each year the Amistad tours ports throughout the Atlantic Ocean that have historical significance to the story of the Atlantic Slave Trade. A clip from the movie Amistad based on the Amistad Incident of 1839 can be found on the Sail Plymouth site www.sailplymouthma.com.

Farmers’ Markets

PLYMOUTH – The Plymouth Farmers’ Market will be held from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. every Thursday through October at Stephens Field, located off of Route 3A just south of Plymouth Center, and from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. every Saturday on the 1820 Courthouse Green in Plymouth Center. Both markets are held rain or shine and both offer handicapped free parking.

The Plymouth Farmers’ Market presents local farmers who bring the freshest seasonal fruits, vegetables, eggs, herbs, cut flowers and plants directly to residents and visitors. Goat cheese, gelato, yogurt, jams, sauces, honey, gourmet take-home foods, breads, baked goodies, fresh caught lobsters, and other handmade sundries – from soaps and herbals to pottery are also offered.

In addition to the fresh produce and homemade goodies the market features a local musical performance every week. The Farmers’ Market is a festive gathering that helps promote local agriculture in historic downtown Plymouth.

Strawberry Festival

PLYMOUTH – The Swift Memorial United Methodist Church will hold its annual Strawberry Festival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 4. Enjoy delicious strawberry shortcake; a small one for $3 or a large for $5. To quench your thirst, cold drinks will be served free of charge. PLYMOUTH – Project Arts is sponsoring a free Air Force Band performance on the Plymouth waterfront from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 4, as a lead-in to the fireworks display. Annual Pilgrim Breakfast

PLYMOUTH – From 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, July 5, enjoy a taste of old New England at the 76th annual Pilgrim Breakfast at the Harlow Old Fort House, 119 Sandwich St. Young volunteers in Pilgrim costume serve up homemade codfish cakes, baked beans, scrambled eggs, muffins, coffee, tea and juice at long common tables where visitors and residents sit down to eat together. The youngest Pilgrim helpers sell “tussy-mussies” – tiny herb-and-blossom corsages that in the Colonial period were said to gladden the heart. A costumed musical group will perform songs of the Pilgrims. The event includes tours of the historic house, crafts demonstrations and other colonial activities for children. The cost of this traditional New England breakfast is $10 per person, with a family ticket available for $35 for a family of four (two adults and two children). Proceeds benefit the preservation of the 17th-century Harlow House, one of the oldest surviving colonial homesteads in Plymouth. Reservations recommended. Summer Buffet art show

PLYMOUTH – The Summer Buffet show has opened at the Plymouth Center for the Arts, 11 North St. The galleries are home to wonderful paintings, fiber art, mixed media, photograph y, sculpture and jewelry. All work is for sale and admission is free. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday; noon to 2 p.m. Sunday. Historic houses open

PLYMOUTH – The historic Hedge House and Harlow House are open for the summer season. The 1809 Hedge House at 126 Water St. is open for public tours five days weekly, from 2 to 6 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, through August (closed July 4). The 1677 Harlow Old Fort House at 119 Sandwich St. is open from 1 to 4 p.m. every Thursday through August. Admission is $5 per site for adults, $2 for children, and free for Plymouth residents.

The Hedge House Museum overlooks scenic Plymouth harbor. Built in 1809, the grand Federal era mansion was lived in by Plymouth merchants and ship owners for more than a century, and features unusual octagonal rooms and an attached carriage house. Furnishings reveal the richness of 19th century social and domestic life, with China Trade treasures, paintings, textiles, and toys on display. The Harlow House was built circa 1677 by Sgt. William Harlow, a cooper and farmer who served for many years as town selectman in the early colony. Coopering tools and handmade coopered items are displayed in this rustic farmhouse with gardens.Both historic houses are owned and operated by the Plymouth Antiquarian Society.
