Driftwood Folk Cafe will present singer/songwriter Vance Gilbert, with Reed Waddle opening the show, at 8 p.m., Saturday, March 13, in Kendall Hall at First Parish Church in Town Square. The doors open at 7:30 p.m.
Gilbert burst onto the singer/songwriter scene in the early 1990s when the buzz started spreading in the folk clubs of Boston about an ex-jazz singer who was “knocking ’em dead” at open mikes. The word spread to New York, where Shawn Colvin invited Gilbert to be special guest on her Fat City tour, and he took audiences across the country by storm.
A year and a half as support for George Carlin provided the most recent chapter in Gilbert’s varied and successful performance history, and lead up to the creation and recording of Up on Rockfield. Gilbert renders blame and absolution, trapped hearts and free-riders, class and station, uncertainty and resolution, the spiritual and the visceral, the forever and the now, all side-by-side in song. In a tireless pursuit of his musical breakthrough, Waddle spent the last year writing and performing while recording his finest work to date, aptly entitled Piece by Piece. Joined by multi-platinum pop icon John Oates, the album was recorded mostly in Aspen, Colo., and produced by Jamie Rosenberg. Rosenberg introduced Reed’s music to Oates after an earlier recording session that was sandwiched between national college dates in Idaho and Oregon. The resulting collaboration created a combination of youthful modern pop with classic rock roots. Go to www.reedwaddle.com for details.
