Self-service holds

Plymouth Public Library patrons now have the ability to pick up their own holds in a designated self-service holds area. No more waiting in line at the circulation desk when it’s time to pick up the requested item. Patrons will find their holds using a coded receipt found tucked inside the book. The books will be shelved alphabetically using the patrons first three letters of the last name and the last five numbers of the library card. Audio-visual materials will still be picked up at the circulation desk. A self-checkout machine is conveniently located in the lobby for a quick and easy checkout. For more information, call the circulation desk at 508-830-4250.

Go Green at the Plymouth Public Library! The Plymouth Public Library and the Manomet Branch Library are celebrating the 14th annual teens/adults/seniors Summer Reading Adventure from now through Aug. 14. The program is geared to teens, adults, and seniors ages 13 and older. Go Green and tnk grEn! at the Plymouth Public Library is part of a statewide library summer adventure. Here’s how to participate.           

1. By registering for the program and completing the options below, adventurers receive entries into a raffle for gift certificates. The winners will be announced at the Lawn Concert Finale with Toe Jam Puppet Band held Saturday, Aug. 20.

2. Everyone who signs up for the program will receive a raffle ticket towards a gift certificate. This year’s games are Time ‘n’ Time Again, Critic’s Corner, and Library Scavenger Hunt. Every time you read a book, use the library’s online databases, view a film, or listen to music, poetry or a book for 30 minutes, mark it down on your Time ‘n’ Time Again log sheet. After you have marked five squares (which equal 2 1/2 hours); you will receive a ticket for the end-of-summer raffle. Every time you fill out a Critic’s Corner form for a book, music, film, or online database, you will receive an entry into the raffle. You will receive raffle tickets for finding items in the Library Scavenger Hunt.

New addition to the summer program is the Jen Kane’s American Reading Adventure at americanreadingadventure.wikidot.com.

4. The library is a great place to stop in for a cool moment during the hot, busy summer – it’s air-conditioned. There is also a nice quiet garden area in the back with a wisteria-covered pergola. There are numerous lists available in the library with suggested book titles, genres, movies, and music for you to enjoy. The library online databases BookLetters and NoveList are a great place to start. Library staff is available with readers’ advisory suggestions for books, movies, and music.

5. Manomet Teen Writers’ Group will meet from 3 to 4 p.m. every Wednesday from June 30 through Aug. 4 to write and share stories with other writers in a comfortable atmosphere.

Over the past 10 years, hundred of teens, adults and seniors have participated annual in this component of the summer reading adventure and more than 1,000 children are involved in the Youth Services program. There is always something for the whole family at the library.

 

Jewelry making

Visit the Manomet Branch Library at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 31, to explore using common household objects to make interesting and intriguing costume jewelry for teens and adults. This program is free and no registration is required. It is sponsored by the Plymouth Public Library Corporation. 

 

Concerts on the Lawn

The free 11th annual Concerts on the Lawn are held in conjunction with the library’s summer reading program. This year’s theme is Go Green at your library and tnk grEn. The 2010 Statewide Summer Reading Adventures are sponsored by the Plymouth Public Library, the Massachusetts Regional Library Systems, the Boston Bruins and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. The one-hour concerts start at 1 p.m. and are held on the spacious front lawn of the main library, 132 South St. Concert-goers are invited to take a blanket or lawn chair, sunscreen, and a picnic lunch to enjoy before the concert. In case of inclement weather, the concert will take place in the Otto Fehlow Meeting Room on the first floor of the main library.

Redwoods Club

Kids ages 9 to 12 are invited to join the Redwoods, a weekly summer reading club, for games, crafts and other fun projects. The club meets at 3 p.m. Thursdays at the main library, 132 South St., beginning June 24. At the Manomet branch, 12 Strand Ave., the club meets at 2 p.m. Mondays, beginning June 28. This program is free and registration is required. Registration is not inclusive of all eight weeks of the summer reading program; please register for each meeting you wish to attend.

 

Sprouts Club

Children ages 3 to 5 are invited to join the Sprouts, a weekly summer reading club, for stories, crafts and other fun projects. The club will meet at 10:15 a.m. and again at 11 a.m., Tuesdays, at the main library, 132 South St., beginning June 29. At the Manomet branch, 12 Strand Ave., the club will meet at 9:30 a.m. Thursdays, beginning June 24. Parents are encouraged to pick the session that best fits their schedule. This program is free and registration is required as space will be limited. Registration is not inclusive of all eight weeks of the summer reading program; please register for each meeting you wish to attend.

 

Geckos Club

Children ages 6 to 8 are invited to join the Geckos, a weekly summer reading club, for stories, crafts and other fun projects. The club will meet at the main library, 132 South St., at 3 p.m. Tuesdays and again at 4 p.m. The club meetings began June 22. At the Manomet branch, 12 Strand Ave., the club meets at 10:30 a.m. Thursdays beginning June 24. Parents are encouraged to pick the session that best fits their schedule. Teen Writers

Are you a writer or interested in creative writing? Join the Manomet Teen Writers Group this summer to write and share your stories with other teen writers in a comfortable (not-scary) atmosphere. In each session you will have time to write, listen to what others have written and perhaps, share your own work. Participants looking to take a more serious approach should speak with librarian about how to achieve a certificate. This group will meet Wednesdays at 3 p.m. from June 30 through Aug. 4. This program is free and no registration is required. It is sponsored by the Plymouth Public Library Corporation. 

 

Recycled crafts

Kids ages 6 to 12 who enjoy crafting are invited to the main library at 3 p.m. Wednesdays in July for a recycled crafts program. All materials will be provided. Free; registration is required and begins two weeks before each program.

 

Tots ‘n’ Tales

Tots ‘n’ Tales, a half-hour storytime for ages 3 and younger with a caregiver, resumed at 11 a.m. June 23 at the main library. Tots ‘n’ Tales is held at 11 a.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays at the main library, 132 South St. At the Manomet branch, 12 Strand Ave., the storytime resumed at 11 a.m. June 21. Tots ‘n’ Tales uses age-appropriate, fun stories combined with traditional rhymes, puppets and musical instruments to promote literacy skills development in young children. This program is free and no registration is required.

 

Old Colony Book Group

The Old Colony Book Group meets on selected Tuesday evenings from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the History Room of the Plymouth Public Library. As part of the library’s “Go Green” themed summer reading program, the selection will be Rachel Carson: Witness for Nature by Linda Lear. Lear’s biography of Rachel Carson was awarded the prize for the best book on women in science by the History of Science Society in 1998. Lear had a successful writing and lecturing career and in 1987 was able to turn her interest to the emerging genre of environmental history. After 10 years of research and study, the Rachel Carson biography was completed and published in 1997. For the meeting held July 20, the first 243 pages were read. For the Aug. 17 meeting, read from Chapter 11, “Nothing Lives to Itself” to the end of the final Chapter 19, “I Shall Remember the Monarchs.”

Mother Goose on the Loose

Mother Goose on the Loose resumed at 10:15 a.m. June 23 at the main library, for children ages 18 months and younger. The program also resumed at 10:15 a.m. June 21 at the Manomet branch. It will run for eight weeks during the summer reading program. Mother Goose on the Loose is a half-hour storytime that is designed to build literacy skills in very young children. The program uses traditional rhymes, classic stories, musical instruments, puppets and more to engage young children while building social and cognitive skills. The program is free, though registration is required as space is limited. Registration includes all eight weeks of the program.

 

Lego Club

Children ages 8 to 12 are invited to join the Lego Club, which meets monthly at the main library, where kids use their imagination to design and build with Legos. Each month will have a new theme as the inspiration for designs. Free; registration is required.

 

Library on Facebook

Plymouth Public Library and the Manomet Branch Library have recently established a presence on Facebook. You do not even need to sign up to visit the page and see all that is going on. Anyone can sign up for Facebook and interact with the people they know in a trusted environment. Facebook helps you connect and share with the people in your life. The Facebook at the Plymouth Public Library was started in October 2009 and now has more than 175 fans.
