The Plymouth Guild for the Arts held its annual meeting March 30 at the Plymouth Center for the Arts on North Street. After the status of the Guild was discussed and the election of officers was complete, the evening moved on to “Three Views” – a demonstration of three different artists’ interpretations of the same model.
While approximately 90 members in attendance watched, artists Dianne Panerelli Miller, Edwina Caci and Paul Crimi created their respective renditions of model Alba Thompson. Plymouth Art Guild president Andrew Kusmin facilitated conversations between the artists and their audience, giving each the opportunity to explain their process and approach, while fielding questions.
Edwina Caci, who teaches Beginning to Intermediate Drawing & Painting Tuesday afternoons at the Center, captured her signature “caricature” style quickly. Beginning with a light-colored canvas, Edwina incorporated various colors one may not associate with portraiture into her composition, creating interesting shadows and highlights.
Dianne Panerelli Miller, who teaches Oil Painting Tuesdays and Fridays at the Center, began her composition with a traditional color palette, also choosing to begin with a light-colored canvas, while creating a bust rendition.
Paul Crimi took a more abstract approach to his composition, choosing to begin with a black canvas, and incorporating the surroundings into his interpretation.
The subject of “Three Views,” Plymouth’s own Alba Thompson, used her time during the sitting to entertain the audience with stories about her vast experiences serving on several town boards and committees.
All in attendance enjoyed learning about the process of the artists, their approaches to the subject matter and the stories shared. Over refreshments, the members could be heard discussing the experience and how it has inspired them, chatting with one another about how what they observed could be applied to their own process.
