Southern beachfront open, but high tides will impact access

The chicks on the southern part of the beachfront at Plymouth Long Beach are now able to fly, and the vehicle restriction has been moved northward to the adjustable groin. We are now able to accommodate approximately 100 vehicles on the beachfront. Least Tern chicks are still present on the northern part of the beach, and when they are able to fly, the vehicle restriction will continue to move northward. Updates on vehicle access can be found on the Environmental Management page at www.plymouth-ma.gov.

Although we will gain more vehicle access as the summer progresses, we will have to contend with a few tidal issues. Above average and extreme tides will affect travel corridor access from Aug. 12-16, and from Aug. 19-26. During these periods, the Crossover will close to vehicle traffic for several hours each day. Depending on the tide height and weather conditions, vehicles may be required to leave some or all of the areas on the beach north of the Crossover. Generally, tidal closures last for 1-1/2 hours before and after the high tide. Please check your tide calendar before coming to the beach so that you can plan your day accordingly. Tide calendars are available in the Environmental Management Office located on the second floor of Town Hall.

As always, parking will be available along Ryder Way during these tide events. If you park along the roadway, make sure your vehicle is in a designated parking area marked by brown parking signs and is not blocking the flow of traffic.

As vehicle access increases north of the Crossover, here’s a reminder of a few of the basic rules for the beachfront: stay in the vehicle corridor at all times, including when you are parking; look for the green flagging on the post and twine fencing before parking (red flagging indicates a no parking area); and, for the safety of yourself and those around you, please observe the 10 mph speed limit.
