He didn’t carve his initials into the cement of the Long Beach seawall but it’s obvious that the DPW Director Jonathan Beder feels a kind of pride of ownership.
When the town’s hopes for federal and state funding for repairs to the Long Beach seawall, which was seriously damaged by winter storms in 2010, did not materialize, the town looked inward.
The Plymouth Beach For All Coalition is nibbling away at the $750,000 it will cost the town to purchase the Laughlin property on Long Beach.
Last week they announced a donation of $500 to a special gift fund set up to defray at least some of that money.
This week they announced a party – at Bert’s Restaurant – the proceeds from which will go directly to the same fund.
The party, set for October twenty-second at 7 p.m., will include two bands, a $5 cover charge, and a distant view of the property proposed for purchase through the bay windows of Berts.
There will also be a raffle, a silent auction and repeated appeals for donations.
If you would simply like to help pay for the beach property purchase, you can send a check made out to:

Selectman John Mahoney made a big splash Saturday.
Mahoney issued a challenge to the numerous department heads and town officials on hand for the grand opening of the new Hedges Pond Recreational Area. “Join me for a plunge,” Mahoney said.
It’s hard to tell what awaits you as you peek in from Hedges Pond Road through the gated entrance to the new town-operated recreation site that officially opens next Saturday, July 16.
It is essentially what they used to call a “pork chop lot,” where just beyond a narrow entranceway the land balloons out.
Once through the gates, it is still hard to imagine just how large a parcel this is.
The land at the front of the site – including parking areas, a bathhouse and new playground – encompasses move than 28 acres.
Plymouth offers many ways to cool off during a hot summer day, whether at one of the many ponds in town, at the new splash pad at Nelson Beach or on one of the town's sandy oceanfront beaches. Just don't forget to take your sunscreen.
The Department of Conservation and Recreation will sponsor free “First Day” family hikes in 14 state parks across the commonwealth New Year’s Day, as a way to connect children and parents with the great outdoors, even in winter. One hike location is Ellisville Harbor State Park in Plymouth. Meet at 1 p.m. in the parking lot off Route 3A.
The chicks on the southern part of the beachfront at Plymouth Long Beach are now able to fly, and the vehicle restriction has been moved northward to the adjustable groin. We are now able to accommodate approximately 100 vehicles on the beachfront.
Recently, the Crossover re-opened with parking for approximately 10-15 vehicles. And there is also parking available near the Crossover, and in the Day Parking area and other areas along Ryder Way.
