In the 17th century, female actors were considered prostitutes. So, casting for Shakespeare’s plays involved careful selection of clever male actors adept at morphing from pants to skirts at the drop of a sword – or a hanky.
I relish the often unique and non-Hollywood themes that most independent films offer. It was true of the recent Winter’s Bone, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Played With Fire, and it’s true of the latest offbeat offering, Get Low, running through Sept. 9 at Plimoth Cinema.
It’s like that inspiring quote: “The future is…a place that is created – created first in the mind and will, created next in activity.” The myriad of children’s programs sponsored by the Plymouth Center for the Arts takes this axiom to heart, as it invests its time in teaching, supporting, and mentoring children in their artistic interests and pursuits.
Several different wrestling, boxing and mixed martial arts organizations have found their way inside Plymouth’s Memorial Hall over the years. The historic building will have a new tenant Friday, Sept. 10, when the national Ring of Honor wrestling group comes to town.

Plimoth Plantation brings fun to summer evenings this August. As the sun begins to fade, summer evenings heat up with excitement at ‘Plimoth at Night,’ the new line-up of evening programming presented by Plimoth Plantation and Mayflower II. Between live Shakespeare performances three nights a week, Plimoth Cinema seven nights a week, extended hours onboard Mayflower II and additional specialty programming like “Dog on a Log,” at the Wampanoag Homesite, Plimoth Plantation is breathing new life into Plymouth evenings.
From 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29, Colony Place in Plymouth will host the annual Back to School Kids Fest.
The Jetsons, a very funny comedy penned by Andrew Nielson, very loosely based on the television cartoon, will be the closing attraction at the Priscilla Beach Theatre. The Jetsons performances are at 10:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug. 27-28 with a special closing performance at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 28.
Super Why is a new show for preschoolers on PBS that encourages early reading skills. The show is also available to view online or download as a podcast. One of the Super Why show goals is to make reading adventurous and fun. Super Why does that, and more. The characters go on reading adventures, discover the alphabet, practice the magic of spelling, and use the “power to read” to change the story.
