Spring has arrived and the herring are running at the Jenney Grist Mill at 6 Spring Lane in Plymouth. From April to May, thousands of river herring move from the ocean up Town Brook to spawn. Each year hundreds of families visit the mill to watch the herring climb the fish ladder as they head for Billington Sea where they will spawn. Go inside the mill and experience a presentation which includes the exhibit “The Life Cycle of the River Herring.” The mill is open for tours given by its miller, who tells of the importance of the fish to the Pilgrims and how the fish helped them to survive. Learn about the original mill built in 1636 by Pilgrim John Jenney and how industry and free trade began here. Experience the wonder of nature and share some history with your children. After your tour you can sit on the deck and enjoy an ice cream.

Admission to the mill helps to support its educational programs. The mill is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. Mondays. Tours are on the hour and half-hour with the last tour beginning at 4:30 p.m. Closed Sundays except for groups with a reservation. Reservations are not necessary, but are suggested. Admission is $6 for adults 18 years and older. Children 17 years and under are admitted free on the History for Kid program when accompanied by a parent or grandparent. For more information or to volunteer contact Nancy Martin at 508-747-4544. Visit www.jenneygristmill.org for details.
