The Plymouth Center for the Arts aims to awaken the artist within all of us with its 2012 schedule of events. In 2011, with the addition of new, special programs, both the Center’s membership and the number of visitors increased and gallery shows have drawn submissions from artists across New England.
Specific Plymouth Guild for the Arts committees oversee the behind the scene functioning of the Plymouth Center for the Arts. Important decisions concerning exhibits involve the Gallery Committee. Artists Carole Raymond and Paula LaRue are the co-chairmen of this 12-member team that oversees the operation of the Russell and Members’ galleries in the Center and the gallery at Cordage Park. This group has been busy planning art shows and events for 2012. It ordered new hanging systems for several rooms at the Center and is planning to install new pedestals to display three-dimensional art. The committee has also instituted new policies to make the shows more exciting.
WHAT KINDS OF ACTIVITIES ARE BEING PLANNED?
Plans are in the works for Sunday afternoon programs to include demonstrations, special shows and musical features. The first event of the year is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 15, from 1 to 3 p.m., when artists Andrew Kusmin and Edwina Caci will provide critiques of work submitted by artists. Members and nonmembers are invited to take works to be critiqued – or just come to watch and learn. Admission to this event will be $5.
Another special event, scheduled for early February, is the "Visual Inverse" poetry project, in which 15 poets have agreed to write original poems about pieces of art on exhibit in the Winter Show. Planning further ahead, you can mark your calendar for Feb. 19, when artist Sean Cassidy will demonstrate his oil painting techniques from 1 to 3 p.m.
HOW MANY SHOWS ARE OFFERED EACH YEAR?
In 2012, there will be five regular shows at the Plymouth Center for the Arts, in addition to the annual Juried Art Show that is held each fall. There will be several other special shows, including the second annual Photography Show, a Student/Teachers Show, a Fine Crafts Show and other one-person events. There are also four shows scheduled for the Cordage Park Gallery.
WHO CAN SUBMIT ARTWORK?
All Plymouth Art Guild members can submit work to the Members’ and Cordage Park galleries. Only “juried” artists can display work in the Russell Gallery at the Center. Jurying takes place twice each year. Information on the jurying process is available on the Guild’s website at www. Plymouthguild.org.
