The Plymouth Guild for the Arts has begun a major restoration and preservation project on its two historic buildings at The Plymouth Center for the Arts: the Russell Library and The Lindens. Renovations are being done inside as well as outside, and it’s the Guild’s obligation to assure that the architectural, historic and cultural features of the exterior of the buildings, as well as certain interior features of the Russell Library, will be maintained forever for preservation purposes and to prevent any change of the exterior of the buildings that will significantly impair or interfere with its preservation value.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE OUTSIDE RENOVATIONS BEING MADE AT THIS TIME?
The full restoration and painting of the exterior of the historic Lindens is nearing completion. This was not just a little scraping and painting. It also consisted of finding, removing and replacing any of the damaged clapboard and insulating the walls. The columns will be replaced and the portico repaired at the entrance to the Linden.
WHAT IS BEING DONE INSIDE THE BUILDING?
Major things have taken place inside the buildings that house the PCA. This renovation started just less than five years ago, when we acquired the space at 11 North St. Now, you will find beautiful gallery spaces and improved classrooms with better lighting. The Russell Gallery and the classrooms have been fitted with air conditioning, for a cooling artistic experience now available throughout the summer months. We have also added a new classroom on the lower level of The Lindens and new and improved seating for music, theatre and other art programs being offered in the Russell Gallery.
ARE THESE SPACES AVAILABLE FOR RENT?
Of course! We provide studios for artists to rent and galleries for artists who would like to have solo or collaborative shows. We also welcome corporate events and weddings. Our rates are competitive and affordable. Come on in, check out the space and consider the Center for your next event. You will not be disappointed.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER RENOVATIONS UNDERWAY?
As they say about artists, your greatest work is never done. We are working on our infrastructure, from thermal windows to a dehumidification system on the lower level of The Lindens, which will allow for the expansion of the classroom space and storage space. We will continue to identify projects and provide restoration and/or renovation as necessary.

Come on in! The Center is open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4. The Center has remained open during all of the renovations and will continue to be open except for the holiday closing from Dec. 22 to Jan. 3.
HOW ARE THESE RENOVATIONS BEING FUNDED?
We are very blessed with many generous donors who have contributed money, materials and labor over the past four and a half years. We received a Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Grant, awarded through the Mass. Cultural Council, in September 2007. Some of the money has been raised through our annual Hats Off to the Arts Gala over the last two years.
Come by and visit the Plymouth Center for the Arts and see the progress. It’s going to be an exciting year in 2012. It will be our fifth birthday in July and with the recent renovations, we are going to party like rock stars! Come join us!
