The Plymouth Center for the Arts presents this year’s Hats off to the Arts Friday, June 26. A Salute to Film will be a gala evening long remembered. Partygoers will be surrounded by hundreds of pieces of original artwork as they dance in the Center’s handsome 1901 classical revival-style Russell Gallery with hundreds of old and new friends. Few locations on the South Shore can match this elegant old-world ambiance combined with such an abundance of original art.

The goal of the evening is to raise funds for a new roof for the three-building complex that has been the Center’s home for the past two years.

The honorary chairs for the event will be singer/songwriter Livingston Taylor and the Plimoth Cinema team.

Taylor has toured with such major artists as Linda Ronstadt, Jimmy Buffett, Fleetwood Mac and Jethro Tull. He has recorded 13 albums and performs more than a hundred shows a year, and still finds time to teach a course in performance at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. His Martha’s Vineyard “camp” was featured in the New York Times Great Homes and Destinations section April 24.

The Plimoth Cinema team brings important small-release films to Plymouth’s local independent movie theater at Plimouth Plantation, something normally found only in big-city venues.

Hats off co-chairmen Deborah Calvert, Nancy Markley and Nancy Sealey have put together an exciting evening of entertainment and dancing to the lively music of Stage Door Canteen. Simply Divine Catering will offer guests tempting and theme-inspired hors d'oeuvres.

Partygoers will browse through the extensive first floor of the Plymouth Center for the Arts surrounded by original art, not only in the Russell Gallery but through the entrance lobby and into the rooms of the 1830s Lindens building.

The Center’s new exhibit will be “Summer Buffet,” presented in addition to the Plymouth Theme Show and mini art.

The “Hats Off” gala will kick-off the 2009 miniature exhibition and sale, an annula event featuring 4-by-4 and 5-by-7 inch works in watercolor, oil, pastels, photos and fiber art, all beautifully framed and ready to hang. The “minis” will go on sale when the doors open at 7 p.m.   The earliest partygoers will have the best choice.

Guests will also enjoy a film loop of some of their favorite movies from the last 30 years, courtesy of Plymouth Rock Studios.

A third room will offer a PowerPoint presentation on the story of the Plymouth Center for the Arts – from the first days when dozens of volunteers loaded dumpsters with trash on a sultry summer weekend, through the months of building improvements and exciting Center activities.

John whale watch, to name but a few.
